AAA’s Roadside Battery Service:  A Real Crowd-Pleaser
Kirk Hendrix

Cold weather leads to dead batteries, and, we are seeing our share of both.  That’s what prompted me to share my story.

I was a long-time member before I joined the team here at AAA Hoosier Motor Club.  And like many of you, I was enjoying the vast array of member benefits.  And while it would be hard to pick a favorite, one of mine is our battery service and I want to ensure your familiarity with it, as it will likely become one of your favorites, too.  You see, we can help wherever you find yourself stranded by a dead battery, be it roadside, the mall parking lot, across America, or even in your own garage.

Our on-the-spot service analyzes your battery, charging system and starter and can even detect, in most instances, if there is an existing parasitic energy draw.  Specially trained and certified technicians, driving battery-dedicated trucks, provide these services using state-of-the-art equipment. Best of all, the initial diagnosis is free, and if a replacement battery is needed, you can rest assured that only a high-quality battery that meets or exceeds the original equipment manufacturer’s specifications — and one that fits your automobile — will be used and installed on the spot.  The entire process ordinarily takes only about 20 minutes…as I can personally attest.

About 10 years ago, I was working late one winter evening at an Indianapolis downtown office building.  Ready to head home, I discovered I had a dead battery…a thrilling moment, indeed.  It was late, dark, and cold. I immediately called AAA.  A technician was to me within about 20 minutes.  He tested my battery and showed me the result.  I needed replacement and he offered to do so.  I then wondered how long this would take, the technician chasing down a battery and returning to install it?  Much to my surprise, his truck was equipped with batteries, including one that fit my need.  He installed it and about 10 minutes later, I was back in action.  Now, I braced myself for the bill.  I thought, now they’ve got me.  I’m a sitting duck here.  And to my surprise, I was very pleased with the price of the battery.  Admittedly, I had not shopped batteries to know exactly what I might find, but it seemed more than fair to me and I was happy to pay.  Then, over the course of the next few days, out of curiosity, I did some comparative shopping at some of the major brand auto parts stores in town only to confirm that the AAA battery I purchased was priced fairly, even less than many stores.  That only underscored my belief in the program.

But you don’t have to take it from me.  Our members do the real talking. While our roadside satisfaction scores are high across the board for all kinds of service, they are even higher when members use our battery service.

Beyond the convenience and competitive pricing, all AAA members enjoy a built-in $25 discount on replacement batteries. And we go even deeper for our Plus and Premier members which receive additional $20 and $25 dollar discounts, respectively.

You’ll want to keep in mind, most car batteries last three to five years, depending on local climate and vehicle usage patterns. Our batteries have a six-year warranty (three-year full replacement and an additional three years prorated) which simply is unmatched in the industry.  So, if your vehicle’s battery is getting old, if the engine cranks slowly or if you’re beginning to notice dim lights when turning the ignition key, now is the perfect time to have your vehicle’s electrical system and battery tested through AAA’s Mobile Battery Service.

I’m convinced you will value the program, as well.

Be safe.
