Smart Travel Planning Includes An International Driver's License

AAA

Advanced planning for international pleasure or business trips goes a long way toward ensuring those travels become treasured memories years from now.

One important step in the planning process is to secure an International Driving Permit. The IDP is accepted in more than 150 countries outside the United States and serves as a legal identification document that translates U.S. driver's license information into 11 foreign languages.

Many popular travel destinations—Greece and Japan, for example—do not recognize the U.S. driver’s license but accept the IDP. Other countries—such as Spain and Italy —recognize the U.S. driver’s license, but only in conjunction with a translation from the specific country—exactly what the IDP does.

Even if you're not planning to drive, AAA recommends carrying the IDP as added protection while overseas. Should you need to communicate with foreign authorities, this widely recognized form of photo identification can get you on your way more quickly.

Purchasing requirements:

The IDP can be used for one year from date of issue and must be accompanied by a valid U.S. driver's license at all times.

AAA Hoosier will process your application while you wait, by appointment during normal business hours. Schedule an appointment conveniently via our website or by contacting your nearest AAA office. AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to officially issue an IDP. International Driving Permits are available at AAA's network of 1,000 travel agencies in the U.S.
